It is because of this belief that I constantly seek ways to inspire each to their greatness. I am intense. No one has any doubt that I am a committed leader in most things I do. But I know now that this passion I have is fueled at some level by frustration I have that others think they have no leadership responsibility.
I challenge you to come up with a single instance where someone has NO leadership impact.
Someone is always watching....
Someone is always listening...
Someone ALWAYS comes behind, after, or next to you.
Your influence on the universe is leading. What you do, even just to yourself, is leadership.
If you choose to love others, smile at everyone you pass throughout the day, and perform intentional acts of kindness you are leading by example. If you snap at everyone you meet, scowl, and maintain a selfish attitude YOU ARE LEADING BY EXAMPLE.
If you start a movement to improve recycling in your neighborhood, you're ACTIVELY making a change in the flow of garbage in the world. If you choose not to... your non-action has an impact.
One of the most heart-wrenching measuring sticks I use in my life on whether my impact to others is worthy is when I ask: Do I want my children to learn/see/do/experience this?
Do I want them asking every other driver on the road, “Really?” or “WHAT are you thinking?” (oops.....)
Do I want them scared of spiders... or airplanes?
Do I want them to marry and stay with a man that disregards, manipulates, and abandons them....?
THEY are my “mirror”. Some of the hardest decisions I have had to make in my life were fueled by the knowledge that MY ACTIONS IMPACT THEM.... their growth and development... and health.
Find that in your life. It can be yourself. It can be your mentor. It can be your mother, your sister, father, brother. But find a way that you can ask yourself... what if THEY saw me do this? ….what if they did this to me? Do you want to see your actions repeated my someone you care about.... or even yourself?
Don’t write off the need to grow “leadership skills” because your title doesn’t have the words manager or supervisor in it. If you walk into a grocery store you have an opportunity to lead by example.
Stop saying you’re a not a leader!
